Guidelines and Rules for Vocal Groups

Vocal Jazz

CLASSES OF PARTICIPATION:

Senior: open to all junior and senior secondary students.
Junior: open to all middle school and junior secondary students - no grade 11 or 12 students allowed.

REPERTOIRE:

All vocal jazz groups must perform no more than 3 selections - as is the case
with the  instrumental category, groups must perform Jazz repertoire with one
piece being in a swing or shuffle style, one piece a ballad, and the third piece being
a "director's choice" (see section 5 under Jazz Band and Combo regulations).
Pop material is to be avoided.
Combination choirs may perform up to 2 of their selections as concert or chamber choir repertoire. One selection must be jazz repertoire.

CATEGORIES OF PARTICIPATION:

Vocal Jazz Combo:  3 to 6 vocalists with a major emphasis on improvisation. Singers
must sing in harmony in order to be adjudicated as vocal groups.

Small Vocal Jazz Combo: 1 to 2 vocalists with a major emphasis on improvisation. Singers
are not required to sing in harmony when two are present in a group.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble:  7 to 24 vocalists. Exceeding this number is not recommended.
Microphones will be limited to 18.

Combination Choir: Unlimited size of groups, but groups larger than 40 must give the festival advanced warning.

All vocal ensembles should be prepared to participate in the Saturday evening
showcase concert.  Failure to participate may render the group ineligible to
receive a invitation to MusicFest Canada. Groups participating in the Saturday evening
concert can perform any one selection of their own choice.

VOCAL PRESENTATION and PERFORMANCE:

1. Every facet of the performance, including the accompaniment, will be
evaluated. Professional  accompanists are not permitted; all accompanists must conform
to the rules governing the category entered (regarding age and relationship to the director).

2. Performance is limited to 25 minutes total stage time. Please respect our performance
times so we can keep the festival running efficiently.

3. It is suggested that each group provide a score and/or sound advisor to work with our
sound technician at the time of performance. No group will be allowed to use their own
sound technician.

4. Each group must provide two scores for each performance selection. These
must be presented at the registration desk at least one hour before scheduled
performance time. No photocopies of published works are  allowed (original
scores only – order an extra copy now to avoid conflict with this rule!).

5. Rhythm section and accompanists for all but Combination choir must meet the grade requirements for their category. Combination choirs are encouraged to use student accompanists, but may use professional accompanists if needed.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:

25 minutes warm-up
25 minutes on stage
25 minutes private adjudication

EQUIPMENT PROVIDED:

Acoustic piano, guitar and bass amps, high quality drum set, conga drums,
music stands, and 18 mics. No choral risers are provided by the festival, though
low risers will be in place on stage from the jazz bands.

VOCAL JAZZ  EVALUATION:

Based upon the adjudicator evaluations, ratings of Gold, Silver, Bronze, and
Participation will be awarded. Gold groups from each class and category may
be awarded an invitation to  the MusicFest Canada.

The B.C. Interior Jazz Festival is first and foremost an educational
festival. Assessment tools and format, including written and recorded comments
as well as the post-performance conference are designed to help directors and
students focus on strengths, discover weaknesses, and determine areas which need
to be explored further.

Written and recorded adjudications will be available shortly following the completion of
a particular category/class and may be  picked up at the registration desk at that time.

The festival is generally structured in order that instrumental groups
perform on Thursday (daytime),  Thursday (evening), Friday (late afternoon), and
Saturday (daytime).  Vocal groups must perform on Friday  (usually prior to
about 2:00pm). Instrumental combos perform on Thursday (all day).
